Ostwald Ripening of Droplets: the Role of Migration

چکیده

A configuration of near-equilibrium liquid droplets sitting on a precursor film which wets the entire substrate can coarsen in time by two different mechanisms: collapse or collision of droplets. The collapse mechanism, i.e., a larger droplet grows at the expense of a smaller one by mass exchange through the precursor film, is also known as Ostwald ripening. As was shown by Glasner andWitelski [8] in case of a one-dimensional substrate, the migration of droplets may interfere with Ostwald ripening: The configuration can coarsen by collision rather than by collapse. We study the role of migration in case of a two-dimensional substrate for a whole range of mobilities. We characterize the velocity of a single droplet immersed into an environment with constant flux field far away. This allows us to describe the dynamics of a droplet configuration on a two-dimensional substrate by a system of ODEs. In particular, we find by heuristic arguments that collision can be a relevant coarsening mechanism.

The life of an anise-flavored alcoholic beverage: does its stability cloud or confirm theory?

The well-known alcoholic beverage Pastis becomes turbid when mixed with water due to the poor solubility of trans-anethol, the anise-flavored component of Pastis in the water solution formed. This destabilization appears as the formation of micrometer-sized droplets that only very slowly grow in size, thus expanding the life of the anise-flavored beverage. The slow growth has been attributed to...

On the Ostwald Ripening of Thin Liquid Films

Abstract. Dewetting instabilities cause a thin liquid film coating a solid substrate to rupture and finally form complex patterns, which are quasiequilibrium parabolic droplets connected by an ultra thin residual film. During the Ostwald ripening process, droplets exchange mass through the residual thin film without touching each other. Bigger ones grow while smaller ones shrink and disappear. ...

Interface Motion in the Ostwald Ripening and Chemotaxis Systems

Ostwald ripening and chemotaxis are two different mechanisms that describe particle motion throughout a domain. Ostwald ripening describes the redistribution of a solid solution due to energy potentials while chemotaxis is a cellular phenomenon where organisms move based on the presence of chemical gradients in their environment. Despite the two systems coming from disparate fields, they are co...

Ostwald ripening in Two Dimensions : Correlations and

We present a systematic quasi-mean eld model of the Ostwald ripening process in two dimensions. Our approach yields a set of dynamic equations for the temporal evolution of the minority phase droplets' radii. The equations contain only pairwise interactions between the droplets; these interactions are evaluated in a mean-eld type manner. We proceed to solve numerically the dynamic equations for...

Ostwald Ripening in Thin Film Equations

Fourth order thin film equations can have late stage dynamics that are analogous to the classical Cahn–Hilliard equation. We undertake a systematic asymptotic analysis of a class of equations that describe partial wetting with a stable precursor film introduced by intermolecular interactions. The limit of small precursor film thickness is considered, leading to explicit expressions for the late...
